Almost fell out of my chair when I read this in the WSJ ... the relative scale is simply staggering, Chardonnay is a step function above all other US wines:
It's not surprising that Chardonnay became America's white wine of choice. Consider this: Americans drink about five times more California Chardonnay than all other white varietals from California combined. They drink more California Chardonnay than all red varietals from California combined. And despite a backlash against Chardonnay among some aficionados, its popularity continues to grow.
Read that last part again. The math makes you realize that, despite its outsized press, Cab is quite small relative to Chardonnay:
Chardonnay > (Cab + Merlot + Pinot + Zinfandel + misc.)
